About Black Hills Products

Dave started his manufacturing career in 1998 finding work as an apprentice engineer at a local car parts manufacturing plant. In 2003 he started work designing special-purpose machinery and conveyors for the automotive industry, with clients such as Land Rover, Volkswagen & Johnson Controls. Dave gained a reputation for robust design and efficient project management. He fast became the preferred engineer to Johnson controls until he decided to start an independent Land Rover repair specialist based on Trading Estate Tyne Tunnel.

This business was a major learning experience and many lessons were learned but they soon gained a reputation for repairing the previously thought unrepairable and with a zero return policy, customers quickly realised they had found a different kind of repair garage. During this time, in 2011 Black Hills Products was born initially manufacturing white label parts for a single distributor in the Land Rover aftermarket sector, a relationship that still continues to this day.

In 2018 Dave closed Cheviot 4×4 to concentrate on Black Hills Products, relocating to a new premises in Sleekburn the business expanded into larger fabrications for Northern Powergrid as well a spot welded fabrication for an industrial toolbox company.

In 2020 they expanded to 3 full-time members of staff, with a further 2 kickstart placements were created in Aug 2021.

In May 2021 the decision was taken that in order to align with the strategic growth plan they needed an ISO certification. They examined what their competitors held, their strategic trajectory and where they would be heading as a company. It was decided that an Integrated Management System was the way forward, incorporating Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety ISO certifications. Such certifications would put Black Hills Products in a very niche market sector being such a small company holding a triple ISO certification.

They have intentionally committed to this level as it lays the foundations for systems managing an exceptional level of quality, their consideration as a business regarding the environmental impact, and employing outstanding Health and Safety practices as well as investing in people from the outset. They have experienced significant growth over the last three years and have no plans of slowing down.

Black Hills Products’ aim is to be on the list of the top 20 companies in the North East within 8 years.
